Open Level Yoga
David Wallin
Thursdays, 9:00 AM - 10:15 AM

Open Level Yoga is a class for experienced students as well as beginners with a higher fitness level. Breath is emphasized throughout this vinyasa flow practice, as well as quieting of the mind and opening of the heart. The class consists of softer Yin Style Yoga poses targeting connective tissue, followed by a more active Yang practice which stretches and strengthens the muscles themselves. The classes include vigorous sun salutations, standing, seated and reclining poses as well as some balancing and inverted poses. Relaxation, including a guided meditation, closes each class. Pranayama (breath work, energy flow) meditation and philosophy are included.

David Wallin

In 1981, David began taking Hatha Yoga classes at the Yoga Institute of Houston with Lex Gillian. In 1987, after relocating to Chicago, he began studying with Suddha Weixler at the Chicago Yoga Center.

David completed his teacher training in with Suddha in 1995 and has been teaching ever since. Over the years he's studied many styles of yoga with many teachers. These include; Ashtanga yoga with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Richard Freeman, Ayurveda and yoga with Scott Blossom, Anusara yoga with John Friend, Yin Yoga and anatomy with Paul Grilley, Yin and Vinyasa yoga with Sarah Powers, yoga and anatomy with Tias Little and Visesha Vinyasa krama yoga with Srivatsa Ramaswami.

David has also been influenced by the writings of Erich Schiffmann and T.K.V. Desikachar as well as the Buddhist teachings of the Dalai Lama and Thich Nat Han. He also is always learning new things from his students as well. Everyone approaches yoga with a unique set of physical and emotional needs. With that in mind, he guides his students as they work to strengthen and open themselves within their own capacity. Over time they create their own practice, exploring and focusing on the asanas (yoga poses) and the processes that work best for them.

His classes combine soft Yin yoga, which targets the connective tissues as well as more active poses that stretch and strengthen the muscles. David also emphasizes the breath and encourages opening the heart and quieting the mind while practicing.
