Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine is a complete medical system that has identified, treated and prevented illness for over twenty-three centuries! While it can remedy ailments and alter states of mind, Chinese medicine can also enhance recuperative power, immunity and the capacity for pleasure, work and creativity. Within the Chinese model is the understanding that all of creation is born from the marriage of two differing energies, yin and yang. Harmony of these energies promotes well- being while disharmony can lead to dis-ease. Thus the strategy of Chinese Medicine is to restore harmony.
Each human can be compared to a garden in which doctor and patient together strive to cultivate health. Every person has a unique terrain to be mapped, a resilient yet sensitive ecology to be maintained. Like a gardener uses irrigation and compost to grow robust plants, the doctor uses acupuncture, herbs, food and massage to recover and sustain health.
Unlike western medicine that focuses primarily on biochemistry and physical and structural integrity of the organs, Chinese medicine has an additional focus on the energy or chi that fuels the body and all of life. This includes the energy of thoughts and emotions. All illness is understood as a consequence of either a depletion, excess or congestion/blockage of energy, which in turn affects blood flow. This energy resides in and flows through pathways called meridians.
Conditions are diagnosed by assessing the energy flow through pulses, observation and a very detailed questioning. Treatments may incorporate acupuncture, herbal remedies, diet, exercise and massage.
